The New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa is a points based permanent residency pathway managed by Immigration New Zealand (INZ). It is designed for skilled workers who are employed by or have a job offer from an INZ accredited employer in New Zealand. Unlike temporary work visas, the SMC Resident Visa grants you the right to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely from the date it is approved. Your partner and dependent children up to age 24 can be included in your application.
The SMC is New Zealand's main skilled residence pathway. Significant changes announced in September 2025 took effect from 24 August 2026, introducing two new pathways alongside the existing framework and simplifying several wage and qualification rules.
You must be aged 55 or younger at the time you submit your Expression of Interest (EOI). There is no minimum age, though you must be legally able to work in New Zealand. Age is not directly scored in the current SMC points system, unlike Australia's PR points test.
You must demonstrate that you can speak and understand English. INZ accepts evidence such as a passport from an English speaking country (including the UAE's British educated workforce holding UK or Irish passports), or results from an approved English language test. Acceptable tests include IELTS General or Academic, PTE Academic and others approved by INZ. From the August 2026 update, English language test results from certain tests are now valid for a longer period for SMC applicants. You must be working for, or hold a confirmed job offer from, an INZ accredited employer. The job must be classified as skilled, meaning it falls within ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 in most cases. Since 9 March 2026, the minimum wage threshold for skilled work at levels 1 to 3 is NZD 35.00 per hour. For skill levels 4 and 5, the threshold is NZD 52.50 per hour. For occupations on the red list (higher immigration risk occupations), additional requirements apply. Amber list occupations are eligible but require extra evidence of genuine skills shortage.
The current SMC uses a simplified 6 point threshold system introduced in October 2023 and continuing under the August 2026 framework. You need a minimum of 6 skilled resident points to submit an EOI. You must hold a current skilled role or a confirmed job offer from an INZ accredited employer paying at or above the relevant wage threshold. Log into the INZ online system and submit your Expression of Interest (EOI). There is no fee to submit an EOI.
